Confession before a priest, technically known as “auricular confession,” is a part of our Anglican heritage. Though is often underused, it is always available. Confession is not a requirement in the Episcopal church. The general guideline is “all may, some should, none must.” Priests who hear confessions in the Episcopal Church are bound by the vows of secrecy. What they overhear (in truth, the penitent is confessing to God in the presence of the priest) will never be disclosed or discussed with anyone else. Confession in this manner can have a powerful impact on one’s spiritual condition – it can be truly soul healing.
